The Dutchman admits he knows United held talks with Thomas Tuchel to replace him but he is now looking to pen a new contract after Sir Jim Ratcliffe opted to keep him.
We revealed last week that one of his former trusted lieutenants, Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake, looks set to join his coaching staff at the Red Devils.
Ten Hag first worked with the 52-year-old Dutch coach at the youth level from 2005 at Twente.
Now, 19 years later, they are set to reunite at Old Trafford.
Hake went from the academy at Twente to eventually landing his first job as a first team boss FC Emmen in 2010.
After two years there he became assistant at PEC Zwolle and then returned to Twente as No.2 to Alfred Schreuder before later becoming manager himself.
He was sacked two years into that role, but he rebuilt his reputation at FC Utrecht, and it was during this period that he found himself going viral.
That was when he starred in a documentary called ‘FC Utercht: No Guts, No Glory’ which showed him delivering a furious dressing-room rant.

In the scene, he kicks it off with a loud “f***ing hell” before he turns to one distraught looking player and says: “Don’t you have anything to say to the boys instead of sitting with your head down?
“You f***ed up the game. Two stupid yellow cards.”
As the player tries to hide by pulling a shirt over his head, Hake continues: “That’s one and second if I put in an extra defender, f***ing s*** don’t give away the first zone then it’s three against two in the middle and they get a goal. Unbelievable.”
Hake left Utrecht for Go Ahead in 2022 and will depart them after guiding the Dutch side to ninth in the Eredivisie last season.
Reflecting on their relationship a year ago, Ten Hag said: “He’s a trainer with a CIOS background who worked very methodically.

Meanwhile, Hake told Voetbal International about Ten Hag in 2021: “He was incredibly driven, ambitious, but also extremely convinced of himself.”
“We think the same about many things in life and in football.
“At Twente we worked together intensively and we infected each other, in the good sense of the word.
“As a result, you also drive each other to new insights and plans.

“This creates a kind of shared vision.
“We both love the game and perhaps our working method is partly the same.
“We are both not averse to hard work.”
United have not commented on the potential appointment of Hake.
